Every problem we call impossible has probably already been solved. In another field. By someone who will never know you exist.

Progress has been an accident

Laennec rolled a sheet of paper into a tube to listen to a patient’s chest, and the stethoscope followed. Perkin was eighteen, trying to synthesise an antimalarial over Easter, and made the first synthetic dye instead. Brin and Page built a search engine by reading the web as a citation graph, which was an idea out of bibliometrics, and nobody planned any of the three.

We have been waiting for the right person to be born in the right place holding the right two books, and when it happens we call it genius and write a biography about it.

The wall is vocabulary

A biologist and a radar engineer can be working on the same physics and never find each other, because they describe it in words the other has no reason to read. Every tool built to help them is built on top of those words. Keyword search matches them. Embeddings cluster them. Citation graphs follow people who already read each other.

So the tools return the neighbours. They are very good at finding the same thing said slightly differently in the field next door, and structurally incapable of finding a different thing that works the same way three fields over, which is a ceiling that more documents does not raise.

Index the shape of the problem

We reduce every mechanism to what is physically happening, under what conditions, and how it fails. The field's language comes off. What is left is a description that belongs to no discipline, and two papers with the same underlying structure land in the same place whether one was written about sensors and the other about cells.

A researcher describes what they are stuck on and gets handed the work from a field they would never have thought to search, with the conditions it ran under and the distance between those and their own, and it stops there without telling anyone what to do next.

Then it is scheduled

If the collisions can be produced on demand, the next breakthrough stops being an accident. It becomes a thing you plan, budget and staff.

This tool is for people who know they don't know what they don't know, and want to know it.

The United States spends around $202 billion a year on research across 25 federal agencies. Those bodies of work do not read each other. There is no layer between them, and we are building it.
